Master keying can best be defined as the process of creating two or more levels of keying to one or more cylinders. Think about a hotel. Each individual guest room has the key that opens only that room. A floor maid may have a special master key that opens each room on her floor but no other rooms in the hotel. And the hotel manager may have a key that allows her to open all of the rooms on every floor of the hotel.
In order to Master-key a group of locks the locks must all be made by the same manufacturer or at least have interchangeable keyways.
